Door Ajar

When one door closes another door opens; but we so often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door, that we do not see the ones which open for us. ~Alexander Graham Bell

When my granddaughter, Sarah Morgan, visits, I know the bird cage door will be closed soon after her arrival.  I get such joy out of watching her.  She cannot walk through the kitchen without latching the door. To Morgan, it's a door, and it should be closed. I reopen it when she leaves, knowing the next visit she'll close it again. (Bird is ornamental...!)

During my mundane dusting project the other day, I caught myself smiling about that door, when the thought came to me: How many times do I shut a door God opens?  Paul, in his letter to the church at Corinth tells them, "I hope to see you soon [but] a wide door for effective work has opened to me."

How many times does God open a door for me, yet I look longingly at another? A barn door -- really, Lord?  I like the one with the brass kick plate... This door is rather plain -- Can you open the one with the antique door knocker?

We worry about what people will think if our work is judged lowly. Or, we'd rather work behind the scenes where no one can see and judge.  We'd rather speak to the big crowds instead of spending our days offering grace one on one. We'd rather decorate than clean, write  than conduct a Bible Study, produce award-worthy roses instead of visiting the elderly to share a bouquet of fresh flowers, shop instead of sheltering, buy food instead of teaching others to can/freeze their garden's bountiful harvest.

Many years ago my husband, RB, sang in an oratorio guild.  A wife of another choral member asked me if I sang.  When I told her I didn't, she said, "I don't either.  When people ask me that I just tell them, No, but I can scrub a mean kitchen floor."

Maybe God has some kitchen floors waiting on the other side of His  open door. Paul said God opened a door of effective work. As we choose the door of obedience, God places within our hands the tools we need.

Dishcloths of love
     Dustpans of joy
          Pens of encouragement
               Candles of light
                     Songbooks of blessing
                          Roses of beauty
                               Fabrics of peace
                                    Textbooks of knowledge
                                         Diapers of cheerfulness
                                               Canning jars of opportunity

As we do our effective work, we find our cupped hands full.  Hands that offer grace one by one.  Don't forget -- God's greatest work is done through our obedience, through the acceptance of what we are called to, and through the offering of doing all to the glory of God.

Thanks for visiting "True Hope and a Future!" I absolutely loved this post, especially when you said, "We'd rather speak to the big crowds instead of spending our days offering grace one on one." God has closed the doors to the big crowds for the moment and has me ministering to my daughter and grandson - dirty diapers and all. Thanks for the great reminder. Blessings to you!

What a beautiful post! I need to be more cognizant of those open doors. It is so true that we are to serve Him in all that we do, even in what we consider to be the most mundane of tasks. We are where He wants us to be and we can do everything for His Glory. Have a great weekend! Many blessings, Lisa

As I read this post, one door I closed came to mind right away...Wonderful reminder of God's plan for us with "effective work" of his own making.

Really inspiring post. I should know, because God has opened soooo many doors for me in my life. I'm so thankful about this.

The books you've recommended seem really inspiring. My inspirational book, Sunday's Child has also just been published. I'm looking out for bloggers who promote books like these to do reviews on their blogs. If you're not interested, forget I even said it.

Thanks for a very inspirational and uplifting post. Also, thanks for leaving your kind comment on my relationship blog (different from the one I've signed in here with).

Another wonderful post. Several years ago I found myself complaining at messes made by my family that I had to clean up. One day God taught me this lesson from His Word: "And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him." Co. 3:17
I soon learned that every task, no matter how small or insignificant it seemed, could be done cheerfully and for God's glory. It changed both my attitude and the way I look at those small (often mundane) tasks in life.

I agree with you on everything you said. Love that quote too. I think it is so true - we must look at the good things God gives us and not miss it looking at the negative! sandie

I want to be looking for those doors of opportunity and not looking behind to the doors that are shut. He chooses the door for us and there's always a prize behind it.
Blessings.

Pamela, this is a beautiful and convicting post. I think we are all guilty of wanting to close the door that doesn't seem good enough, yet as you say, it is in our obedience that God uses us.

Pamela - This is a lesson I'm learning over and over again - to see everything as God's work and worthy of being done to the glory of God. Your words on this subject are a blessing. Praying you have a wonderful 4th!
